Good Marketing is a Journey from ADD to OCD

No author starts with fantastic marketing approaches and finds excellent results. That’s not how it works.

Marketing is all about trial and error. You can learn from your fellow authors’ experiences but in order to sell your books, you have to do marketing yourself. Also, not everything that worked for your colleagues will work for you. You have to find out what works for your talent, skills and personality.

How do you do that? Experiment with a LOT OF DIFFERENT approaches. Pretend you have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and try out a variety of things no matter how diverse or odd they seem. As you go through this process, you’ll find some approaches to be much effective for you than others.

Figure out what’s working and what’s not … start focusing more on approaches that are working in your favor. This is the OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) part.

The name of the game is experimentation. No marketer can be effective without taking experimenting.

A few points to remember:

  • You will experience fear but then you have to decide what that means for you. Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything and Rise?
  • You might not have all the skills needed to try different approaches. In those cases, you might need to find some help.
  • You will need to evaluate each approach by its results. So, know what your yardstick is. Is it more sales? More visibility? More email addresses?
  • Lastly, you will need plenty of patience because marketing is not easy and its not instant. It takes time to get results.

I hope this helps.
